Introduction, Plot & Theme

'To Sir, with Love' is an autobiographical novel written by E.R. Braithwaite. The novel is based on the true events of the author's life when he took up a teaching job at Greenslade School in the East End of London after World War II. The author had to tackle racism and prejudice in British society, as he was refused jobs despite being highly qualified simply because he was black.

Core Theme: Student-Teacher Relationship
  • The primary theme of the novel is the student-teacher relationship, which is predicated upon mutual respect.
  • Braithwaite initially meets a bunch of disrespectful, ill-mannered, and mischievous students.
  • He changes his approach and treats them as adults, requiring the girls to be called 'Miss' and asking the students to call him 'Sir'.
  • Through patience, tolerance, and innovative teaching methods like taking students on field trips to museums and theatres, he transforms them into mature young adults.

The Students' Council Programme

Chapter 17 focuses entirely on the half-yearly report of the Students' Council, which took place in the school auditorium on November 15.

Purpose and Significance of the Event:
  • The programme was entirely arranged, presented, and controlled by the students.
  • Its main purpose was to analyze and discuss the academic progress of the students.
  • Students presented what they had studied, giving teachers a clear picture of their understanding.
  • It provided the perfect platform for students to showcase their organizational skills, voice their opinions, and take active participation in their own progress.
  • Braithwaite sat in the audience, feeling anxious but eventually beaming with pride as he watched his students behave like mature adults.

The Panel Discussion (Denham vs. Miss Phillips)

An important feature of the half-yearly report was the panel discussion at the end, where a randomly selected panel of teachers (Mrs. Dale-Evans, Miss Euphemia Phillips, and Mr. Weston) answered student questions.

The Great Debate on P.T. Classes:
  • Denham's Argument: Denham severely criticized the P.T. class, arguing that exercising twice a week for twenty minutes was a waste of time and offered no health benefits. He believed only kids who needed it should do it, while physically fit boys should play other games.
  • Mr. Weston's Reaction: Mr. Weston responded ridiculously and tried to escape the questioning by talking loudly and pretending to be offended.
  • Miss Phillips' Skilful Defence: Miss Phillips stepped in and justified that the timetable was designed to benefit the maximum number of students due to limited resources. She argued that doing things you don't like is an exercise of the mind as much as the body, and it prepares students for the real world.
  • The Outcome: Realizing he had been completely outwitted by her clever and sweet arguments, Denham accepted defeat and gracefully gave up the matter.

E.R. Braithwaite (The Narrator) He is a black engineer who reluctantly takes up teaching due to racial discrimination. Initially easily angered, he learns to be patient and compassionate. He treats his students with respect and successfully transforms their unruly behaviour.
Denham A trained boxer and a natural leader among the boys. Initially aggressive and bad-tempered, he transforms into a mature and respectful young man. He confidently criticizes the P.T. class but accepts his defeat gracefully when outwitted by Miss Phillips.
Miss Phillips Described initially by the narrator as a mousy, thin, and seemingly brainless woman. However, she proves to be the best-informed teacher on the panel. She answers questions with candour and authority, skilfully rescues other teachers, and cleverly outsmarts Denham.
Miss Joseph A senior girl and a natural leader who co-hosts the Students' Council event with Denham. She is confident and introduces the class theme of the "interdependency of mankind" to the audience.
Fernman He brought comic relief to the programme by bringing a human skeleton on stage. He used it to stress the conclusion that all human beings are the same.
