IF....Not = Unless

Let's learn how to use 'Unless' in place of 'If...Not'

 

Before the use of If ....Not or Unless ,you should know about Clause & their types. Clause means a group of words as a part of sentence with only one main verb ands subject . 
उपवाक्य म्हणजे शब्दांचा समूह जो वाक्याचा भाग असून ज्यामध्ये एक कर्ता व एक विधीय असते. 
Kinds of Clause:- There are three types of clause. 
        i) Main Clause                (प्रधान उपवाक्य)     
        ii) Co-ordinate clause     (सहाय्यक उपवाक्य) 
        iii) Sub- ordinate Caluse.(गौन उपवाक्य)

    Main Clause:- 

    A Clause which is not depend upon others , it has its own meaning is called as Main
    Clause.(जे उपवाक्य अर्थाने स्वयंपूर्ण असून ते इतरांवर अर्थासाठी अवलंबून नसते त्यास प्रधान उपवाक्य असे म्हणतात)
    For Eg :- If you do not hurry ,you will miss the train.
    Main Clause - you will miss the train.

    Co-ordinate clause :-

    A clause of two self dependent sentence and a second sentence is connected with first by the co ordinating conjunction.(या मध्ये दोन्ही उपवाक्य अर्थाने स्वयंपूर्ण असून ते कॉर्डीनेट कंजेक्शने एकमेकांना जोडलेले असतात.)
    For Ex :- He is a teacher but he works as socialist.

     Sub- ordinate Caluse:- 

    A clause which is depend for its meaning upon the main clause is called as sub-ordinate clause.(जे उपवाक्य अर्थ पूर्तीसाठी प्रधान उपवाक्ययावर अवलंबून असते त्यास गौौण उपवाक्य असे म्हणतात)
    For Eg :- If you do not hurry , you will miss the train.
    Interchange of  If .... Not to Unless.
    Rule No. 1
    • When both the clause are positive, use unless in place of if and make the main clause negative.ज्यावेळेस दोन्ही क्लाॅज होकारार्थी असतील अशा वेळेस IF च्या ठिकाणी UNLESS वापरून प्रधान उपवाक्य हे नकारार्थी बनवावे
    Examples For Practise:-
    i) If you study hard , you will get good marks. (use uless)
    Ans:- Unless you study hard , you will not get good marks.
    ii) If you pay the tution fees , you will be allowed to sit in the class.
    Ans:-Unless you pay the tution fess,you will not be allowed to sit in the class.
    iii) If the student believe upon the teacher , they will get success in their life.
    Ans:-Unless the student believe upon the teacher , they will get success in their life.
    iv) If you have faith ,you can do anything.
    Ans:-Unless you have faith,you can not do anything.
    v) If the son is more eduacated ,the dowry is higher.
    Ans:-unless the son is more educateed , the dowry is not higher.
    Rule No. 2
    • When both the clauses are negative, use unless in place of if and make the subordinate clause positive and put main clause as it is. 
    • (ज्यावेळेस दोन्ही क्लाॅज हे नकारार्थी असतात तेव्हा IF च्या ठिकाणी UNLESS वापरून तो क्लोज होकारार्थी बनवावा व प्रधान उपवाक्य आहे तसेच ठेवावे)
    Examples For Practise:-
    1)If you do not work hard ,you will not get success in the exam.
    Ans:-Unless you work hard, you will not get success in the exam.
    2) If he doesnt study hard,he will not place in the merit list.
    Ans:-Unless he studies hard , he will not place in the merit list.
    3) The body can not perform any function if there are no specific nutrients.
    Ans:- The body can not perform any function unless there are specific nutrients.
    4) If you do not collect you examination admission card ,you will not allowed to sit in the  exam hall.
    Ans:-Unless you collect you examination admission card,you will not allowed to sit in the exam hall.
    5) If roads do not develop along highways, trafic can not be regulated.
    Ans:-Unless roads develop aong highways , trafic can not be regulated.
    Rule No. 3
    • When one of them is negative, use unless in place of if and make both the clause affirmative. ज्या वेळेस दोन पैकी एक होकारार्थी व दुसरा नकारार्थी असतो अशा वेळेस   IF च्या ठिकाणी UNLESS वापरून दोन्ही क्लाॅज होकारार्थी बनवावेत.
    1)I shall be thankful if you do not insist on dragging him into court.
    Ans:- I shall be thankful unless you insist on dragging him into court.
    2) If you are brave , you will not fear.
    Ans:-Unless you are brave , you will fear.
    3) If you can not behave yourself , you will have to find another job
    Ans:-Unless you can behave youself , you will behave to find another job.
    4) He will be poor if he is not satisfied.
    Ans:-He will be poor unless he is satisfied
    5)If i dont study geography , how can I become an expert on birds?
    Ans:-Unless I study geography , how can i become an expert on birds?
